Plastic Water Tanks or House Poly Water Tanks come in various shapes and sizes, with the most common being larger Round Tanks and smaller Slimline Tanks. Most can be repaired by Plastic Welding (Poly Welding) which is the melding of a plastic filler rod with the tank area to be repaired.

Round tanks are usually straight forward to repair as there is plenty of access all around. Large splits, Leaking Valve fittings, Machinery and vehicle damage are usually all repairable.

New Fittings and Patches over holes can be welded on both Round Water Tanks and Slimline Water Tanks. Both types can also have bases and roofs fixed.

What Causes a Tank to Crack?

Apart from accidental damage there are various reasons for tanks cracking from manufacturing faults, design flaws to installation issues or tank movement over time. Water Tanks need to be on a firm Level Base with concrete being the best and least prone to movement.

Quite often a pad is levelled on a slight slope or even retaining wall built and a level pad made for the tank and road base or crusher dust used for a base. These tend to erode over years leading to the tank tilting which places stress on the walls causing splits.

Other causes are weak areas where valve outlets are located or constant turning valves on and off which twists the tank at that location leading to splits from the outlets. Outlet pipes installed that are too rigid which do not allow the tank to flex as it fills and empties also cause these splits.

Tank roof splitting is often caused by the base not being level causing the tank to try to tear across the middle especially of the roof is supported by a pole (Tend to be older designs) The weight of water is on the downward side causing the split.
